ICS was honored to have a few of its own “back home” on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul D. Connick, Jr., a member of the ICS 8th grade graduating class of 1968, joined our 4th - 7th grade students and faculty for Mass and the 2021-2022 Student Council Inductions.
The main celebrant of the Mass was Father John Langan, SDB. Fr. John is the Coordinator of Youth Ministry at Archbishop Shaw High School. The Mass celebrated was the Feast of the Archangels. With the help of students from Archbishop Shaw, Father John explained the great battle between St. Michael the Archangel and Satan from the Book of Revelation. The Shaw students were also former students of ICS: Todd Ritter, ICS ‘17; James Nero, ICS ‘19 and William Walker, ICS ‘21. He encouraged our students not to be too prideful and to follow the example of the archangels when faced with adversity.
The induction ceremony followed Mass. When addressing the students, Mr. Connick began by telling the students that coming back to ICS was like coming home. His mother, the late Ann Elizabeth Connick, taught at Immaculate Conception School for many years. He is the brother of 6th grade teacher Mrs. Carmel Hebert. All eight of the Connick siblings attended ICS. He is the uncle to Nurse Michelle Walker and Coach Scott Walker as well as fourth grade teacher Mrs. Tracee Brewer. Connick is the great uncle to our 21-22 President Max Brewer and Homeroom Representative Graeme Brewer as well as other ICS students Jack and Lauren Walker and Henry Brewer.
In his address he congratulated all the candidates, the ones elected and the ones who ran for office but did not get elected. He emphasized that in elections there are no losers and everyone plays a part. He emphasized three traits to being a good leader. He encouraged the students to bring the student body together, to be good listeners, and above all remain humble and approachable. “In the end being a leader is about service. Service to your God, to your school, the students you represent and by extension your community. That’s what it's all about.”
It was also a pleasure to have the parents and grandparents of the student council members join us for Mass. It was the first time since the start of the pandemic in the Spring of 2020 that we have been able to invite parents to a school Mass.
