This is a new and exciting new program that we hope becomes a useful and regular tool for parents and their children.
The Accelerated Reading Program is an opportunity for students to develop their reading skills. Reading, like any other activity: baseball, dancing, bike riding, is a skill that requires practice in order to acquire proficiency.
The AR program accomplishes this in three steps. The first step is to determine each child's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This just means that we determine the reading level at which a student can independently read and comprehend a story. It is determined from the reading scores on their standardized tests. The second step is making sure that the books are available. This is done through monies spent by the various school organizations to purchase and maintain the books in the library. The third and most important feature is time. It is essential that the students are given time to spend on reading!
During the day, many classes set aside time for the students and the teacher to get out a book and read! The recommended time spent on reading is as follows:
RECOMMENDED AVERAGE READING MINUTES
Grade Read to Read with Read independently
K: 1st semester 30 0 0
K: 2nd semester 30 5 5
1: 1st semester 30 10 10
1: 2nd semester 15 15 30
2: 1st semester 15 10 35
2: 2nd semester 15 5 40
3rd and up 5-15 5-15 60
Upon completion of the book, students take a comprehension test on the computer. The AR program keeps track of the books read and the accumulated points. This program, with support from you when you encourage your child to read, will help to make our students, your wonderful children, readers for life!
